Supervision and Support
The core component of the NT RUSC Education program is the rural placement, which is supervised by either a general practitioner or a Remote Area Nurse giving the student an opportunity to work in close contact with the GP, as well as Aboriginal Health Workers and rural nurses. During orientation, students are made cognisant of their responsibilities while on placement, as well as those of their supervisor. NTGPE offers immediate support for students and placement location supervisors in identifying appropriate solutions to unsatisfactory supervision arrangements.
Weekly Teleconferences
Weekly teleconferences are conducted in the Top End and Central Australia, with Medical and Cultural Educators, as well as the Program Coordinator. The teleconference provides students an opportunity to discuss cases and issues they are dealing with on a daily basis during their placement. Each week students will be expected to present cases illustrating important aspects of rural health on a rotational basis. The teleconferences also provide an opportunity for students to touch base with their peers and with NT RUSC team, allowing interim debriefing of issues that may have arisen in the preceding week. The teleconferences provide considerable support and guidance to students facing unique challenges in their new environment.
The expectation is that all students will actively participate in the teleconferences.
