The Cultural awareness/cultural safety training program was developed to support those who wish to work with Aboriginal people, it helps to give participants a greater understanding of the social, emotional and wellbeing of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as the safety of those who are working there, and as part of NTGPE’s strategic plan and RACGP and ACCRM training curriculum. This program is delivered to Medical students, GP Registrars, Junior Doctors and IMGs.
About the Northern Territory
The NT comprises one sixth of Australia's land mass and is 1,346,200 square kilometres in area. The NT population represents about 1% of Australia's total population of 19.5 million. With 17.5% of Australia's landmass the population density for the NT at June 2000 was 0.15 persons per square km, significantly lower than the national average of 2.53 persons per square km.
Population
The ABS 2001 Census put the NT population at 200,019 The Territory's indigenous population is 29% compared with a national average of just 2%, and 40% of those under 15.
