Accreditation
If you are considering becoming a GP Trainer and applying for accreditation as a training practice, it is worthwhile to familiarise yourself and your practice manager with the training program as described under the pages Overview of GP Training, GP Training Terms and Mandatory Requirements. These pages detail GP Registrar training requirements. It is also important to be familiar with the National Minimum Terms and Conditions for Registrars.
To be eligible to host GP Registrars or Junior Doctors your practice or clinic and GP supervisors must first be accredited with the appropriate training body. Accreditation can be obtained through either the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine by completing the appropriate application paperwork. Emailing [email protected] or contacting NTGPE directly can obtain this paperwork.
All completed paperwork must be sent back to NTGPE with all supporting documentation including the application form, copies of the supervisor’s curriculum vitae, CPD listing and NT Medical registration. Once this has been received and endorsed by NTGPE it will be forwarded to the appropriate body for approval.
This process can take up to three months and GPRs and junior doctors cannot be placed with a practice until it has been accredited. Without this, accredited GP Registrar’s time will not be able to be counted towards their training time.
Usually, once the application has been before the training organisations committees they will arrange to do a site visit and grant approval for a period of one year. After this year a new set of paperwork for unconditional accreditation will need to be completed and sent in for approval. As long as there have been no issues in the first 12 months then full accreditation will be granted for a period of three years.
Reaccreditation paperwork must then be completed every three years for GP Trainers and Practices to maintain their accreditation status.
Each new trainer in a practice will be required to complete the necessary documentation to gain accreditation.
All trainers are encouraged to attend the GP Trainers workshops that are held annually in either Alice Springs or Darwin.
