Additional information

History: Batchelor in the Northern Territory has a long and interesting history in Territory terms. Many older Australians remember it from their early Geography classes in the 50’s and 60’s when its development as Rum Jungle was touted across a rapidly developing Australia. It invoked national excitement as one of the first uranium mines in Australia. This in a period when atomic energy appeared to be the panacea to many national energy issues. Rum Jungle, had in those early days a strong sense of national pride attached to it; a sign of a developing resource rich nation breaking new ground in Australia far North. The dream of the rich tropics being made real. The Rum Jungle Uranium Mine eventually gave way over time to the beautiful tropical NT Town of Batchelor – but retained all the original excitement and promise. Originally set up as the service town to Rum Jungle Uranium Mine, Batchelor has grown from this role into a major regional centre. When the mine eventually closed, the infrastructure and other facilities were passed to governments, sold to private providers and eventually developed into the wonderful town of Batchelor we know today. Winner of three NT Keep Australia Beautiful awards over several years Batchelor retains a special charm and unique character as an historic town born of a period of enthusiasm and great vision.

Attractions: A mini duplication of Karlstein Castle – Havlik Park, the NT’s only butterfly sanctuary – Butterfly Farm, WWII Commemorative Cairn and museum, parachuting club. Nearby is Lake Bennett, an artificial lake for water sports, canoeing, golf driving, bushwalking or bird watching. Also nearly is the famous Litchfield National Park, which features a myriad of diverse environments.
