Extended Skills Posts (ESP)

Some of these posts may also be suitable for  year long Advanced Skills Posts and PRRT for ACRRM.

RACGP Extended Skills Posts are available to GP Registrars to assist them to prepare for a particular aspect of practice or to improve their skills and competency in a specific area of interest.

Extended Skills units can be undertaken at any time during your training for a maximum of six (6) months, except in the case of Academic Skills Posts and Overseas Extended Skills Posts which must be preceded by a GPT1 general practice unit.

Under RACGP, up to six (6) months of Extended Skills training can count as part of the 52 weeks of GPT3 general practice training time.

There are a number of options available which can be credited as Extended Skills training. They include, but are not limited to:

Academic General Posts (AGP)

Vocational training in general practice offers the opportunity to undertake salaried training for a period of six (6) months full-time equivalent in an academic term as an Extended Skills Post or as optional extra training. The purpose of the term is to enable GP Registrars to develop skills in research, teaching, project work and critical evaluation of research relevant to the discipline of general practice that will be of use throughout their careers and that will contribute to knowledge exchange and development. The term must provide an experience relevant to general practice and / or primary care. GP Registrars are expected to develop understandings of research and teaching environments and the processes and benefits of cross-disciplinary research.

Be aware of the application closing dates, which are April for commencement in July of the current year and August for commencement in January of the next year. Further information can be viewed at the AGPT website.
