FAQs

Why this approach?

In 2014 Northern Territory General Practice Education (NTGPE) welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to increase the number of GP Registrars training nationally from 1200 to 1500, particularly following the closure of the Prevocational General Practice Placement Program (PGPPP). This increase of GP Registrars ensured that the supply of doctors to remote Aboriginal communities would be maintained after the loss of PGPPP and also provides General Practice with an increased supply of doctors across the NT.

As a result of the increase, we need to ensure all GP Registrars in the NT are placed and not subject to exclusion based on the level of their training. For a fairer system amongst clinics and for the long term sustainability and growth of GP Training in the Northern Territory, clinics participating in GP Training will now be required to place a minimum of one GPT1 or PRRT1 (GP Registrar in their first six months of GP Terms) to assist.

It’s important to understand that the first term GP Registrar positions will not be available to GP Registrars at other levels of training.  NTGPE will work closely with those clinics that have not previously offered first term placements to ensure that appropriate support and supervision models are understood. In a recent survey we received confirmation that the majority of GP Registrars feel that their clinic is suited to the Team Supervision Model and have indicated a preference for this arrangement, we will be working with clinics to ensure we develop ways to ensure you are fully supported during your placement.

Essentially, we want to facilitate a more open and fair system between Registrars and Clinics that supports long term general practice in the Northern Territory.

What about part-time and fulltime placements?

This information will be available on this website from 8am, 1 June. Clinics can also notify you whether there is part-time or fulltime available.

2015 and 2016 AGPT Cohort - I am not able train in a remote location?

2015 and 2016 AGPT Cohort GP Registrars have a remote training requirement of their training that they accepted when they accepted a training place with NTGPE. Exceptions to this are processed at the time of entry to GP Training. Any further exception would be in exceptional circumstances and requires a written application to the DMCE.   If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the GP Registrar Team.

What do I need to prepare?

NTGPE encourage all GP Registrars to be proactive about your placement and consider opportunities prior to 1 June, seek advice from your Training Advisor about your training plan. Prepare your CV and cover letter.

What happens after the 31 July?

NTGPE will match up any gaps for unplaced GP Registrars. GP Registrars who have not yet organised their placement will not get a choice regarding their placement.  It is very possible you will not be placed in your desired region, Darwin and Alice Springs will likely be full.  Training Posts will be offered a number of GP Registrars to choose from.
