Overview

This is a Team Supervision Training Post, meaning Registrars would be managed by a ‘team’ of Supervisors. This team based training approach and a pilot has been approved by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). More information about this model of training can be found here

The health centre provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week acute/emergency response through health staff on call and primary health care to the community: Antenatal Care, Growth Assessment Assessment and Action (GAA) program for infants and children under 5, Childhood and Adult Immunisation, Healthy School Aged Kids Program, Preventable Chronic Disease (PCD) program, Well Women's and Well Men's Screening, Infectious and Communicable Disease Prevention and Control. Emergency evacuations can be made to Alice Springs via Royal Doctor Service.

Gunbalanya

Overview

Population: Approximately 1500 (including Outstations).

Languages: The main language spoken in the community is Kunwinjku with English being the second language.

Permits: Entry permit required into Arnhem Land. Permit not required to work in clinic. Gunbalanya is a dry Community – residents can apply for a liquor permit.

Access

Road: Situated in West Arnhem, 330km East of Darwin and 60km NNE of Jabiru, near the East Alligator River. The roads consist of bitumen and dirt tracks. 4WD is recommended.

Air: Gunbalanya Air operate flights between Darwin POA.

Seasonal: East Alligator river is tidal and isolates the community during the wet season. The road is usually cut from December to April.

Facilities

Store, garage, takeaway, air agency, banking agency, women’s centre, outstation resource centre, social club and swimming pool. AFL is popular among the community.

Additional information

History: Also called Kunbarllanjanja or Oenpelli, Gunbalanya is the traditional homelands to the Mengerr, Erre, Wuningak, Gagudju and Amardak peoples. Oenpelli was established in 1906 by Paddy Cahill (after whom the crossing at the East Alligator River is named). It was taken over by the government in 1916 and then run by the Church Missionary Society until 1977 when control passed back to the community.

Climate: The average temperature all year round is between 36-40°C. During the monsoonal season humidity level can be high.

Attractions: Western Arnhem Land is home to some of the most significant rock art in the world. It has arguably the world's longest continuing artistic traditions - with rock art dating back thousands of years and still being produced today.
