GP Training Terms

Hospital Term

A hospital term (also referred to as 4 hospital units) is completed over 12 months, one year subsequent to the intern year, in an accredited hospital.

All Registrars will be required to undertake mandatory rotations in: general medicine, general surgery, paediatrics and emergency medicine.

In addition, registrars must obtain hospital experience in at least three other areas while in hospital practice: psychiatry, geriatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, anaesthetics and/or infectious diseases, or other relevant hospital experience as approved by a medical educator in consultation with the College Censor.

Basic GP Term

The basic GP Term (also referred to as 2 basic units) consists of six months in a GP teaching practice under GP supervision. This can be undertaken in either a rural or urban site and includes three hours of onsite teaching per week.

Advanced GP Term

The advanced GP Term (also referred to as 2 advanced units) consists of six months in a GP practice still under GP supervision. This can be undertaken in either a rural or urban site and includes 2 hours of onsite teaching per week.

Subsequent GP Experience

This is a 12 month term (also referred to as 4 subsequent units) aimed at assisting GP Registrars to increasingly function as independent members of the general practice professional community.

Registrars can choose to have up to six months of this time in an Extended Skills post.

Extended skills posts
Special Skills or Extended Skills Posts are available to registrars to assist them to prepare for particular aspects of practice or to improve their skills and competency in specific areas. A Special Skills Post can be undertaken at any stage during a registrars training with the exception of an academic special skills post which can only be undertaken after completion of your basic term. Special skills posts include hospital posts, community posts, general practice posts and academic posts.

If you are interested in undertaking a special skills post please discuss this with your training advisor. If we do not currently have an accredited post in the area you are interested in we will endeavour to facilitate the accreditation of a suitable post. More Info

Advanced rural skills posts
RACGP and to an even greater degree, ACRRM state that for registrars to gain the skills necessary to practice in a rural or remote setting, special rural skills posts need to be completed. A number of these will be offered. These posts are up to one year, with the option of 6 or 12 month positions in obstetrics, paediatrics, anaesthetics, surgery and emergency medicine.
