About the Program
The AGPT program is a vocational training program for graduate doctors wishing to pursue a career in general practice. NTGPE’s delivery of the program has been designed so that it meets RACGP Standards, ACRRM standards, Department of Health and Ageing requirements and the needs of the Australian community, with a priority on regional and remote health.
The program follows the curriculum and standards developed by RACGP and ACRRM and incorporates the full spectrum of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by Registrars for independent general practice.
Registrars can choose from two training pathways, the Rural Pathway and the General Pathway. Registrars in the Rural Pathway are required to complete all GP terms in rural areas. Registrars in the General Pathway must complete six months of their training in an outer-metropolitan practice and six months in a rural area.
The training program is structured so that all Registrars will satisfy the requirements to sit the FRACGP (Fellow of Royal Australian College of General Practioners) and hence gain full vocational registration. It will also allow those in the Rural Pathway the option to continue with further education to obtain FACRRM (Fellow of Australian College of Rural Remote Medicine) or the RACGP Graduate Diploma in Rural General Practice (FARGP) should they elect to do so.
