NTGPE Requirements for AGPT Applicants

NTGPE Requirements for AGPT Applicants

NTGPE has specific requirements for training which are designed to ensure all GP Registrars receive the best possible training and learning experiences possible in our NT region. These requirements vary by GP Registrar Training Cohort.

Offers for 2016 training positions through NTGPE will be made specifically outlining which term is to be commenced in 2016.1. In accepting a training position a GP Registrar accepts it to start in that specific term and is confirming that they are able to meet all the requirements below. Any exemption from these requirements MUST be approved at the time of interview.

Four places for 2016 intake will be offered with exemption from remote training requirement. To apply for one of these quarantined training places you will need to apply in writing to [email protected] outlining why training in a remote location would be impossible. NB: these positions are only available for those able to demonstrate true inability to complete the remote requirement e.g. child with health needs requiring access to tertiary hospital. Having children, schooling, partner work etc. will not be accepted as a reason for consideration for these posts. Application for one of these posts does not guarantee offer of one of these four positions.

2016 Training Requirements

1. Variety of Training Posts

All NTGPE GP Registrars are required to experience a broad range of training posts including:

  • A minimum of 18 months of General Practice Term or PRRT training terms during their time with NTGPE;
  • A minimum quota of community based Aboriginal Health Training (minimum two (2) days per week over a six (6) month period);
  • A six (6) month full time equivalent (FTE) Mainstream Placement (can be undertaken as part time for full year e.g. for those also practising procedural skills in regional hospitals)
  • A six (6) month full time equivalent (FTE) Remote Post, being anything greater than 100kms from Alice Springs or Darwin.

(NB: some of these requirements can be met during the same post)

Remote Definitions:

  • Anywhere greater than 100kms from Alice Springs or Darwin (this includes Nhulunbuy, Katherine and Tennant Creek)
  • Where a GP Registrar does not live permanently in the remote location for six (6) months they are required to spend four (4) days per week there including three (3) nights per week
  • Exception to this is the three (3) Fly-in Fly-out posts in Alice and Darwin where overnight arrangements will be negotiated with DMCE on a case by case basis.

2. Workshops

NTGPE hold three compulsory workshops in the first year of training. These cover a range of activities that are best completed with your cohort who are experiencing different training experiences across Australia supported by our Medical and Cultural Educators. These take place in your first two community GP/PRRT terms:

  • GP Registrar Orientation January 18 -20 2016 or 18-20 July 2016
  • Workshops held in week 20 of your first two community GP terms Wednesday to Friday June 1-3 2016 or November 30 - December 2 2016.
  • Remote Orientation prior to remote placement January 17 2016 or July 17 2016

3. NTGPE Training Team Meetings: Face-to-Face or Teleconference

Your Training Team is a team of NTGPE staff who will support you throughout the various training terms you undertake. Your team will consist of a Medical Educator, Program Manager and Pastoral Care Officer. They will track your progress throughout each term and will be available to meet with you and work closely with you to tailor your training program and to meet your learning and personal needs. This will include at least:

  • One pre-commencement meeting
  • Two meetings per year with your Training Team

4. External Clinical Teaching Visits (ECTV) and Mini-CEX

Four (4) External Clinical Teaching Visits (and an addition Video ECTV) – this includes the formative mini-CEX for ACRRM GP Registrars.

5. NTGPE led Education

  • Completion of specific tasks and assessments in the online myGPcommunity platform and through Small Group Learning.
  • Evidence of delivery of four external teaching sessions per year to peers, colleagues and students
  • Formulation and regular modification of a Professional Development Plan

6. Recognition of Prior Learning

NTGPE welcomes applicants who intend to seek Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for some of their previous experiences. Our team will work with you to ensure that your training plan includes the relevant RPL applications and your training experiences with us complement what you have already done. If you have already received RPL with a College you must notify and provide related documentation to us of this prior to your interview as your offer for a training position will take this into account.

GP Registrar Placement Process

NTGPE’s placement process is largely GP Registrar led with input from your NTGPE Training Team who will help you choose appropriate choices to develop your skills across the range of contexts. We endeavour to offer a single window of placement opportunity of any given year to allocate placement for the whole of the following twelve months.

GP Registrars undertaking hospital posts are responsible to organise these themselves and notify NTGPE once the position is confirmed. The 2016 Placement Guide provides further information.
