Dr Straros Roussos
CAAC, Alice Springs
Initially, I planned to become a surgeon and did a number of specialty surgical jobs. But three years after my internship, I changed my mind. It was all because of a life changing moment! An epiphany, if you like. One Saturday morning, a surgeon said to me “You know, my son’s playing his first game of soccer today” – and there he was, in theatre. It made me realise that being a really good surgeon takes over your entire life. I’ve always had other interests outside of medicine and these made me realise it just wasn’t for me. I made the decision to go into rural General Practice and I have never looked back.

My training has been amazing and really different, mainly because I have had such a range of opportunities. I love the diversity of General Practice. You can change it to suit your niche interests and there’s the flexibility that allows you to shape your practice to address those interests and be innovative in what you want to do.
