Description: |
The township of Nhulunbuy is the
Northern Territory’s fourth largest town which was built on
a special purpose lease in 1971 to service a bauxite mine (operated
by the Nabalco mining company, now called Alcan Gove) despite opposition
from the local landowners, the Yolngu. However, the town is now
an intricate part of the region and a major supply centre for Arnhem
Land. Yirrkala (“yearr-kala” roll the ‘r’)
is where most Aboriginal people live which is 14 km south-east.
You will hear Nhulunbuy referred to as Gove, however, Nhulunbuy
is the name of the town and Gove is the name of the Peninsula that
the town is located on. You will hear the two names used interchangeably
but they mean the same place. There are three main medical services
here: there is a 60 bed hospital, an Aboriginal community-controlled
health service (Miwatj Health) and an independent GP. |
