Orientation:
The RUSC orientation provides a structured introduction to the practice of medicine in the Northern Territory. Immediately our students learn about the challenges posed by our unique location and environment. Its a great time to meet fellow students from around Australia who will be part of your weekly
teleconference teaching session.
The orientation commences with a slide show introducing the practice of medicine and unique pathology in the Top End. Topics discussed include:
• Rheumatic Heart Disease
• Renal Disease
• Scabies
• Mellioidosis
• Failure to Thrive
• STDs
• Box jellyfish
This is followed by a cultural orientation by Kevin Parriman about working in an Indigenous context. The cultural orientation aims to provide you with a better understanding in handling the difficulties that you can encounter during your placement.

Orientation session at NTGPE prior to placement
When you return from your Top End adventure there is a structured debriefing process with Kevin Parriman - Cultural Educator and Barbara Allen a Medical Educator to round off your experience.
Debriefing:
During debriefing, you spend time individually with the medical and the cultural educator and can discuss questions, problems, wonderful experiences and other things. You are also required to complete an evaluation on a data base in order to give us constructive feedback about various aspects of the program, how well it is running and any additions or changes that may improve it.
Some handy reading material:
Some material can be lent from NTGPE upon arrival or may be available at the placement location. Look for books at your local bookshop or at your university library.
