The Orientation program is an awareness program
It is a program that will give you an insight to the complex issues of the Indigenous people who are living in remote Australian Communities
This program was not developed to scare you, but to give you a better understanding in handling the difficulties that you can encounter during your placement

Cultural safety is one of the major issues that NTGPE is addressing to all staff members, GP's, GPR's and Rural Undergraduates.

About the Northern Territory:
The NT comprises 1/6 of Australia's land mass and is 1,346,200 square kilometres in area.
The NT population represents about 1% of Australia's total population of 19.5 million. With 17.5% of Australia's landmass the population density for the NT at June 2000 was 0.15 persons per square km, lower than any other State/Territory and significantly lower than the national average of 2.53 persons per square km.

Population:
The ABS 2001 Census put the NT population at 200,019
The Territory's indigenous population is 29% compared with a national average of just 2%.

About the Program:
The program has been developed and is hosted by Kevin Parriman NTGPE's Cultural Educator. Kevin will provide you with a handbook to assist with your stay in an Aboriginal community while on your placement.
