Top End RUSC Accommodation:
Accommodation Bond:
You may be required to pay a bond for staying in particular accommodation provided to you. This system has been implemented as a measure of ensuring that students leave the accommodation in a clean, neat fashion and report any breakages or maintenance requirements.
Some communities are quite isolated and many items we take for granted are not easily available there. So respect and communication is important, to help make your stay and the next students’ stay comfortable.
Rent is not charged for your accommodation but a cleaning bond of $100 is to be paid prior to going bush. This bond will be returned to you when you return to Darwin for evaluation if you have left the student house as clean as requested.
You may be required to submit your bank details, so that NTGPE can reimburse you for accommodation bond and taxi fares (if eligible) via electronic funds transfer.

Bond is usually required if your placement is at:

Borroloola - $100
Galiwinku, Elcho Island - $100
Gapuwiyak - $100
Groote Eylandt - $100 + $15
Gunbalanya - $100
Katherine Hospital - $200
Kintore Clinic, Katherine - $100
Lajamanu - $100
Maningrida - $100
Nguiu, Bathurst Island - $100
Wurli Wurlinjang, Katherine - $100
Power Cards:
If you will be staying in the student accommodation ‘Blue Houses’ at the following communities, then you may need to purchase power cards in order to have electricity supplied to the house :
• Borroloola
• Galiwinku, Elcho Island
• Gapuwiyak
• Gunbalanya
• Lajamanu
At orientation NTGPE will supply you with a $10 power card, and you will be able to purchase more power cards whilst in the community. They are available in denominations of $5, $10, $20 and $50.

When you get to the student house, locate the meter box and insert a power card if the power is not already on. If the power should go off suddenly, check the meter and insert another card. If the power goes off at a weekend and you do not have another power card, press the emergency button on the meter box. This will give you $5 credit off your next power card.
A $20 power card should cover your power consumption for 10 - 14 days. Remember to make your card go further, switch off the air conditioners when you are working or away from the student house.
(It is really important to not leave any food in the fridge or freezer when you leave the community or it will perish, especially because the power will not be on.)

Phones in Student Units:

There is a phone in each of the student ‘Blue Houses’, as well as the student units for those students who are undertaking placements at Wurli Wurlinjang, Kintore Clinic or Groote Eylandt.
You can make local calls but you should purchase some Telstra PhoneAway pre-paid phone cards if you wish to make interstate calls. If you have a laptop computer Internet access is available however you will require a current account with a Internet Service Provider that grants access via a local dial up number. Check with us to confirm.
