Location: |
Galiwinku, on Liyagalawumirr land,
is the major community on Elcho Island and the one of the largest
Aboriginal communities in East Arnhem Land. Elcho Island is situated off the northern coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory The community started in 1942 as a Methodist mission but is now run by an Aboriginal town council. Galiwinku is serviced by a resident GP and health team. Nalkanbuy Health Centre is the health service on Elcho Island which provides a service to over 2,000 people resident on the Island and neighbouring islands. It is a busy clinic offering a full range of services.
