Description:
Tennant Creek Hospital is a modern 20 bed hospital. The staff of the hospital work closely with the local general practitioner and Aboriginal Health organisations, and with rural and remote sections of the Barkly Health Services. The hospital provides a high standard of inpatient and outpatient care for the people of Tennant Creek and the Barkly. There are five full-time medical officers who work in both the hospital and remote areas.
The Hospital includes:
- Accident and Emergency Department - approximately 14,000 patients per year are seen.
- General Ward - most adult medical and surgical inpatients are treated in this ward.
- Paediatric Ward - all paediatric cases, in particular chest infections and gastroenteritis.
- Maternity Ward - approximately 55 deliveries per year. Uncomplicated and low risk pregnancies and confinements are looked after at the hospital.
- Operating Theatres - routine and emergency surgery is performed by resident and visiting medical officers.
Specialists in major disciplines visit Tennant Creek on a regular basis. These include specialists in general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, ENT, paediatrics and psychiatry. These specialists also provide consultations by phone when backup is required by local medical officers.
Allied Health Professionals, including radiographer, laboratory manager, pharmacist and physiotherapist, occupational therapist and dietician work at the hospital.
Seriously ill patients or those requiring specialist treatment not available in Tennant Creek are transferred to another hospital, usually Alice Springs Hospital, by air.
