Royal Darwin Hospital is the main specialist teaching hospitalin the Northern Territory and provides extensive inpatient, outpatient and casualty treatment to the people of Darwin and consultative medical services to the "Top End" of the Territory The Royal Darwin Hospital has 311 authorized beds andprovides general, medical and allied health professional services. The hospital also offers specialist medical services such as intensive care, neonatal intensive care, renal support, oral maxillo - facial services, plastic reconstructive surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat services. In addition, further services are available from consultants who travel from interstate on a regular basis. These services are cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, rheumatology and urology. To support these services, the hospital offers comprehensive diagnostic radiology and pathology facilities. In addition, specific services are also provided for drug and alcohol treatment and sexual assault referrals.
The Menzies School of Health Research is located on the hospital campus and its research facilities are adjacent to the hospital pathology laboratory. Liaison between the two establishments is actively encouraged Royal Darwin Hospital is classified as a teaching hospital of the University of Sydney and will soon have a Clinical Medical School as part of Flinders University. RMO I and II rotations may include combinations from A&E, medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthetics/ICU, psychiatry and accredited GP terms. Diploma of Obstetrics positions are only available for RMO Iis but three month non-Diploma O&G jobs can be taken by 1st year RMOs. Advanced skills posts in Surgery and in Obstetrics can be undertaken. It must be stressed that the role of an RMO in Darwin is much more responsible than in the Tertiary centers in the south and ideal training for future competent GP's. Accredited disciplines: Accident and Emergency, Anaesthetics, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, Paediatric Medicine, Psychiatry, Respiratory Medicine, Sexual Health.
