Cultural Immersion Camp 2013
The 2013 Cultural Immersion Camp saw 30 registrars, junior doctors, medical students and several NTGPE staff visit the community of Belyuen; a community of approximately 225 people located 128 km by road from Darwin and 15 km from Mandorah.
With permission from the traditional owners participants set up a three day camp just outside the community on a picturesque beachfront site. Soaking up the best of the excellent dry season weather, participants enjoyed spectacular sunrises in the mornings, went mud crabbing in the afternoon and lit camp fires in the evening.
Importantly there was plenty of activities and discussion about working in Aboriginal health - specifically remote. This included discussion about men’s business with local Sam Cooper whilst making didgeridoos, learning about women’s business with local Annie Moreen whilst basket weaving, learning about sacred sites in Belyuen by local Henry Moreen, and meeting and talking with the dedicated Belyuen Clinic Staff.

Cultural Immersion Camp for Regional Training Providers (RTPs)
The 2014 Cultural Immersion Camp is open to RTP staff and GP Registrars throughout Australia.
This camp is ideal for CEOs, Directors of Training (DOT), Program staff members and GP Registrars of RTPs as part of the GPET IHT strategic plan.

What are the Objectives of the Camp?
To assist Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to:
- Make their cross-cultural and remote work more valuable to Aboriginal patients
- Work more effectively with their Aboriginal colleagues
- Experience remote living and how it affects one’s ability to access essential services
- Provide a forum for open and honest exchange in a safe and friendly environment
What’s Involved at the Camp?
Camp participants can expect three days of cultural awareness activities including bush tucker, bush medicine, visits to significant sites, family and historical stories, discussion of social and environmental determinants on health, local community visit, hunting and gathering, and more.
Price
$5000 + GST
Includes the cost of the camp, as well as return flights, and one nights accommodation pre and post camp. RTPs can obtain funding through the GPET IHT strategic plan.
