Description: |
Today this small community
has all the facilities for the traveler including a range of accommodation
and activities. Take a walk along the heritage trail and see wildlife,
historic sites and graves of pioneers. Visit the old Timber Creek
Police Station Museum that houses a collection of artifacts and
photographs detailing the history of the area. Just six kilometres
west of the town is scenic lookout with views of the Victoria River
and surrounding valleys and escarpment. This is an excellent spot
to sit and watch the sun go down.The Victoria River is well known
for it’s fishing and there is a boat ramp and campground just
west of Timber Creek available on the banks of this river |

History: |
Timber Creek was named in 1855
when the explorer Augustus Gregory used Timber from the banks of
the creek to repair his expedition’s boat. The first inhabitants
of Timber Creek were Aboriginal people of the Ngaliwurra and Nungali
groups. Descendants of these groups still live there today. Rock
art sites in this region give evidence of their culture .During
early pastoral development all necessary goods for the surrounding
stations were unloaded at Wickham’s original site which became
known as ‘The Depot’. In 1904 a small store was opened
a Police station followed and the township was established as a
result |
