At the mouth of the Rose River on the western coast of the Gulf of Carpenteria adjacent to the extreme SW coast of Groote Eylandt. Numbulwar is approximately 400km east of Katherine by , 570 km south east of Darwin and 250 km south-west of Nhulunbuy

Approximately 665 indigenous people but the fluctuates between 800-900 with movement between Ngukurr, Borroloola and Groote Eylandt. There are also 59 non-indigenous people.

To Groote Eylandt: 30 minutes To Nhulunbuy: 1 hour
To Darwin: 3 hours

Dry season access through Roper RIver and Ngukurr or from Nhulunbuy via Walker River and Harris Creek. Since the airfield was sealed in 2000 Numbulwar is accessible by air throughout the year. However, the airstrip may be closed for short periods (2 days) during the wet season

Numbulwar (formerly known as Rose River mission) is a coastal community on the southern border of what is known as East Arnhem Land, located in Nunggubuyu country. It sits on mouth of the Rose River and the town is constructed amongst sand hills with views over the estuary and out into the Gulf of Carpenteria. Numbulwar was settled in 1925 by the Anglican Church and became self-governing in 1970. The country that Numbulwar is built on, belongs to the Nunggayinbala clan. It is an isolated community, although the road to it is being upgraded. The community is serviced by a resident GP and health team.
