Hermannsburg is located on the Larapinta Drive approximately 125km West of Alice Springs. Larapinta Drive is sealed all the way to Hermannsburg, however, there is a 32km portion of single lane

In periods of heavy rain, Larapinta Drive can be cut by water flowing over the Finke River, Hugh River, Jay Creek and Ellery Creek crossings.

Description:

Hermannsburg is an Aboriginal community with a fascinating history located in the heart of Central Australia, west of Alice Springs. The community is set in the very centre of some spectacular desert country, the gateway to attractions such as Gosse Bluff, Finke Gorge National Park, Kings Canyon and Palm Valley.

Cottages and churches built at Hermannsburg by German missionaries, who arrived in 1877, offer an insight into the early interaction between the European and Aboriginal cultures. Hermannsburg was also home to the famous Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira, and his whitewashed cottage still stands.

Westpac Bank outlet provided at the Ntaria Store. There are two supermarkets at Hermannsburg; the Ntaria Store and the Finke River Mission Store.

The Ntaria Store is clean and generally well-stocked for a community store. General groceries, bread, milk, etc., can be purchased from the store. The store is open seven days a week between 8.30am and 5.30pm. It is stocked from Alice Springs on a weekly basis every Friday. The Ntaria Store is owned and managed by the Ntaria Council. Prices in the store on healthy eating products have been subsidised to encourage their use. Other items tend to be higher priced than in Alice Springs. A basic take-away facility is also located at the store.
