About us

NTGPE is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, formed in 2002 by a consortium of partners including AMSANT, Flinders and Northern Territory Universities, the GP Divisions of the NT (‘SBO’), RACGP, ACRRM and a consumer representative. Also has a GP Supervisor and GP Registrar Liaison Officer position on the Board. The establishment was in response to Minister Wooldridge’s regionalisation of GP training and the establishment of the NT (and northern SA) region.

NTGPE is funded by GPET to provide postgraduate training in General Practice throughout the NT.  In 2003 this comprises 53 (43 fte) GP Registrars placed throughout the NT, who therefore provide significant proportions of NT’s GP and primary health workforce while they are undertaking GP specialist training

NTGPE is funded by RUSC and other agencies to provide short-term non-teaching-hospital undergraduate placements to students from all Australian medical schools.  It also coordinates placements and essential cultural orientation for John Flynn Scholarship holders. In 2003 it will make placements for over 250 students from all Australia’s medical schools for up to eight weeks.

Through an NT-wide organisational structure, it provides the central coordination agency for medical student training placements in the NT, apart from those in the major teaching hospitals, RDH and ASH.

As additional elements of a vertically integrated set of programs, NTGPE also:
- provides remote placements for junior doctors based in RDH through the Rural and Remote Placement Program,
- contributes to recruitment and workforce planning studies undertaken by other agencies, notably the NTRHWA, and
- contributes to CME/CPD programs throughout the NT.

NTGPE has strategic partnerships with a range of other agencies across the NT for purposes related to medical education and training. For example, it has an agreements and joint appointments with the Flinders’ NTCS through which we provide general practice teaching to Flinders GEMP program students in the NT.
