It is important for training posts to understand that becoming accredited does not guarantee they will receive a GP registrar.

As you can imagine, placing GP registrars within training posts in accordance with the accreditation and training requirements from the colleges is a balancing act.

For example, currently NTGPE has more GPT3/PRRT3-4 placements available than GP registrars. On the flip side, training post capacity is low for GPT1/PRRT1 placements which makes finding places for GPT1/PRRT1 challenging. In addition there are restrictions on the level and amount of GP registrars a training post can take each term.

NTGPE will work with training posts to find the manageable number of GP registrars for each post. Team supervision and remote supervision arrangements are available and can be negotiated. Please contact the accreditation team if you have queries about this at supervisor@ntgpe.org

GP registrar placements are usually for 26 weeks:

  • Term 1: January to July
  • Term 2: July to January

The GP registrar placement process starts in May/June each year for the following training year. For example May 2017 will be processing placements for 2018 training terms 1 and 2.

Training posts will be invited to an information session each year before the opening of the placement process, as well as a review meeting after the process has finished to make sure training posts and supervisors are consulted and included in the process.
