Community Information
The town of Santa Teresa is divided into four areas: East Side, New Houses, Old Village and Through the Fence. These areas are used by different family groups in accordance with cultural practice.
History
The history of the community can be traced back to the 1920s when a camp was set up in Alice Springs near Anzac Hill by local Arrente people moving in from the bush. In 1937 a school for Aboriginal children was established due to the arrival of the Catholic Marist brothers. By 1942 the mission was moved to Arltunga, an old gold mining town approximately 90km ENE of Alice Springs. In 1952 a lease of Crown Land was granted by the Commonwealth to the Mission and the following year the settlement was established approximately 85 km SE of Alice Springs. Under the aboriginal land rights (NT) Act 1976 the lease automatically converted to Aboriginal freehold land. Since then the church has handed over the infrastructure (except the school) to community ownership and management. In accordance to the land Rights Act, the land at Ltyente Apurte is administered by a Land Trust comprised of traditional owners. The Health Centre is an Incorporated Body established under the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organizations framework. Its formal name is Mpwelarre Health Aboriginal Corporation and it was established in 2008. Its Board consists of community members and a professional management and clinical team.
